DJI, the world’s leading drone manufacturer, has officially launched the Zenmuse L3, a next-generation LiDAR payload designed to redefine aerial mapping and surveying. The new system promises enhanced range, accuracy, and data quality for businesses across various sectors, including infrastructure, mining, and environmental management.
DJI’s Zenmuse L3 integrates a 1535-nanometre laser module capable of detecting objects up to 950 metres away, even on low-reflectivity surfaces, an essential advantage for mapping Africa’s diverse landscapes. It also features dual 100-megapixel RGB cameras, enabling operators to collect high-resolution imagery alongside precise elevation data in one flight.
The LiDAR sensor is compatible with DJI’s Matrice 400, making it field-ready for surveyors, engineers, and researchers. The system can cover up to 100 square kilometres per day, drastically cutting project timelines compared to traditional ground surveying.
Industry professionals across Africa have welcomed the launch, citing its potential to make professional-grade surveying more accessible and affordable.
Experts say the DJI L3’s combination of long-range performance and imaging clarity could accelerate digital mapping efforts across the continent, supporting projects in infrastructure development, renewable energy, and agricultural planning.
The Zenmuse L3 builds upon DJI’s previous enterprise sensor, the Zenmuse L2, but with a greater detection range and improved imaging accuracy. It forms part of DJI’s growing enterprise ecosystem, which aims to support data-driven industries through advanced aerial sensing technology. It enables faster, more accurate terrain surveys, minimising time in the field and reducing costs.
